This lot consists of TWO original 6 x 8-5/8 inch program booklets from the Summer Olympic Games held in Berlin in August 1936, for events that took place on the opening day of the XI. Olympiad, 1 August 1936. The pair is rarely seen in the 21st century. We offer the Zeitplan or Time Table (above left) for the whole day as well as the program for the spectacular youth performances (above right) in the Olympic Stadium which ended the day.
The 32-page Tages-Programm starts with the time table of 1 August (shown left), officially starting at 8 am at the world-famous Hotel Adlon, just down the street from Hitler's Reichschancellery, several church services and wreath laying ceremonies, a gathering of Olympic Flame runners at the Lustgarten and their reception with the Führer at 13:30, the Olympic opening ceremony (Hitler arrived at 4 pm) and the Festspiel Olympische Jugend at 9 pm.
This program has maps for the Tiergarten area of Berlin and all the festivities at the stadium, the names of the members of the Olympic Committee, quotations by Adolf Hitler and Paul von Hindenburg about sport and character, numbers of participants from each country, the Olympic Hymn (music by Richard Strauss), the Olympic oath, Olympic winners from Olympic Games held between 1896 and 1932, information about tickets and cultural events connected to the Olympics in Berlin.
The last item on the 1 August Time Table is the Olympische Jugend Festspiel which took place at 9 pm in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. This also lot includes the rare program for this Festival Play called "Olympic Youth" by Carl Diem and with music by Werner Egk and Carl Orff. The 6 x 8-5/8 inch, 42-page program has information about content, music, costume designers, pyrotechnic engineers, as well the number of children involved in each act: 900 boys and 2500 girls aged 11-12 in Act 1, 2300 14-18 year old girls in Act 2, 2300 boys and girls, 5000 tents and 1000 18 year old Fahnenträger in Act 3, and a total of 140 dancers in Act 4. After the final act was the performance of the Olympic Hymn with a "sea of fire along the upper rim of the stadium".
All together 10,000 people cooperated on this 1-½ hour long event and Telefunken vinyl records were produced for purchase after the event. This 42-page program is in German, but the performance is explained in both English and French as well.
Both 84 year old Third Reich program booklets (combined page count 74 pages) are amazingly in very nice, little-used condition. No odor.
