1939 NSDAP Stammbuch Josef Hirschmann Sudetengau
Josef Hirschmann, Reichenberg, Sudetengau
When the Sudetenland was annexed to Nazi Germany after the September 1938 Munich Agreement, citizens of that former part of Czechoslovakia could apply for membership in the Nazi Party. Substantial personal background information had to be provided in a multi-page Stammbuch format to become a member of the NSDAP and additional information was required to be submitted if the applicant wished to become a Politische Leiter (Political Leader).
This is the very rare and interesting Nazi Party membership Stammbuch file containing completed documentation and the personal information of one Josef Hirschmann of Reichenberg, Gau Sudetenland, born 18 February 1909.

The material shows that he had served as a soldier in the Gebirgsinfanterie of the Czech Army from 1928-1930, that he was married to Marie Steinbach since 14 September 1935 and had no children. He was a bookbinder by profession.
Another interesting portion of this rare Third Reich document file is the Tätigkeitsliste or Activity List of Josef Hirschmann, dated and signed on 30 July 1939.

Hirschmann became Nazi Party member number 6754089 on 1 November 1938. Previous to his transfer and acceptance into the NSDAP, Hirschmann had been member number 29819 of the SDP or Sudetendeutsche Partei (the Nazi Party of Sudetenland headed by Konrad Henlein) since 16 January 1934.

The file includes official paperwork from the Reichenberg prosecutors office stating Hirschmann had no criminal past as well as an official declaration dated 1 July 1939 that on 1 July 1939 Pg. (Parteigenosse or Party Member) Josef Hirschmann was appointed Hauptstellenleiter für Film und Rundfunk, Acting Leader of the Film and Radio Branch of the Nazi Party in Reichenberg. The paperwork states he was appointed by Richard Dressler, the Leader of Nazi Ortsgruppe Hofberg-Reichenberg (now Liberec in the Czech Republic).

While Nazi Party membership applications in a Stammbuch format are rare all by themselves, this one is considerably rarer because of Hirschmann’s previous membership in the SdP and his position providing Publicity for Film, Photo and Radio as mentioned above.
