This is an absolutely original American WWII Purple Heart medal in its original case with a US 107th General Hospital (England) General Orders Extract 19 document, the shell fragments that wounded the 30th Division 320th Infantry Regiment GI, the GI’s dogtag, an 11 January 1945 320 IR “Morning Report” covering the GI’s Evac, and a local newspaper report that the GI had sent the Purple Heart home to his parents before rejoining his outfit in Belgium in April.
We suspect the GI had his medal engraved in England prior to sending it home, because of the inclusion of his serial number. We purchased all the items you see as a lot with a Nazi uniform and a visor cap and other items from the family of the named GI after his death in 2002. Some items in this listing are for reference only but they provide information that is frequently lacking from otherwise wonderful pieces of World War II history like these!
The GI to whom Purple Heart was given was wounded within about 2 miles of the center of the famous city of Bastogne and just a few short miles from the Luxembourg border.
We know the area very, very well and many of the American dead from the battles in that area are buried at the American cemetery at Margraten in nearby Holland. You can get as much information as you would like about the participation of the 320th Infantry Regiment, online. The internet resources of the 30th Division tend to be less unit specific but will give anyone a much better overview of where these people were and what they were doing there, and how lucky they were to survive.
If you’d like a real, authentic, known GI World War II Purple Heart medal, you will look at a great many before coming up with a better one than this! If you have any questions, we will do our best to answer them.
