This is a very well-made wood and leather whip with an overall length of 71 cm or about 28 inches. The 30 mm (1-1/8 inch) diameter wooden handle is 12-¼ inch (about 31 cm) long and the 7 leather tails are about 16 inches long and bound to the handle with a leather band and three tacks.
The World War II era photograph above from the book "The 84th Infantry Division in the Battle of Germany" (Viking Press New York 1946) has a caption that reads as follows, "IN another part of Salzwedel [Konzentrationslager], two former American PW's inspected the collection of whips used by Nazi guards in a concentration camp. In this camp were 2700 Jewish women from eastern Europe and 300 non-Jewish women, political prisoners from western Europe."
We understand that some people question the accuracy of the caption and some do not. We will not enter into that debate. This item is identical to whips shown in the picture of the two former American prisoners of war at the KL Salzwedel, northwest in Berlin in April 1945.
This whip was purchased in Germany. Itis marked RAD (Reichsarbeitsdienst or German State Labor Service) and has the a date stamp - see photo directly above. It has a twisted rope wrist band. Very good condition.
